Flex Builder 2 and Flash Authoring CS3 on OS X

Posted by: Luke Bayes Fri, 27 Apr 2007 20:44:00 GMT

Is it just me? or is this a strange decision?

After installing CS3, debugging in Flex Builder suddenly launches Flash Authoring and stops sending trace output to Eclipse.

Open Source Flex?!

Posted by: Luke Bayes Thu, 26 Apr 2007 18:09:00 GMT

Apparently Adobe is planning on going open-source with the Flex framework.

It seems this release will include not only the Flex Framework, but also the mxmlc compiler and debugger!

This is really exciting news, thanks to whoever made this call!

Introducing AsProject!

Posted by: Luke Bayes Wed, 04 Apr 2007 19:15:00 GMT

UPDATE: The new versions of Sprouts actually pull down and install the Flex SDK automatically!

UPDATE: AsProject has been refactored, renamed and moved, development is ongoing at the new location for “Sprouts”.

UPDATE: Be sure to check out the updated screencasts at http://projectsprouts.org/screencasts.html.

I’m elated to finally announce AsProject!

This is a cross platform, open source ActionScript development tool set that I’ve been working on for the past couple of months.

AsProject automates a variety of tasks including the creation of projects, classes, test cases, test suites, and swfmill libraries. It automates the download, installation and configuration of the debug flash player and many open source tools. AsProject also includes sophisticated build tools written in rake to automate build processes.

If this sounds interesting to you check out the video demo!

What to do at Apollo Camp? Build a to-do list!

Posted by: Ali Mills Sat, 17 Mar 2007 06:15:00 GMT

As of today, Apollo is in alpha, and boy does it look promising! I’m so impressed with what I’ve seen tonight that I’ve been sitting in the corner for the past hour playing with Apollo (yep, by attending Apollo Camp I scored an alpha copy of Apollo which will be available via labs any day). And, with all the exciting Flash-related things going on lately (Flash Lite 3, Chumby, FlexLib, Apollo, iriver’s U20) it seemed appropriate to build a to-do application with it. It’s both a web and desktop application, and here it is:

Going Apollo Camping!

Posted by: Ali Mills Fri, 16 Mar 2007 18:29:00 GMT

Luke and I will be heading to Adobe later today for Apollo Camp. We’re excited! Long ago, we gave up working on SwfRunner because of Apollo rumors. From what I’ve seen so far, it looks like the Apollo team has pulled it off. Nice work!

If you’re there tonight and see either of us, say ‘hello’. We’ll chat up AsUnit, Flash Lite, Flash, Flex, AS3, AS2, HaXe, Ruby, XULRunner, Google Data (GData), Chumby and of course Apollo. If you buy Luke a drink at Mars, he may even fill you in on his latest super-secret project. :)

See you there.

Running Rake from Eclipse

Posted by: Luke Bayes Tue, 13 Mar 2007 21:22:00 GMT

I’ve been working on a new open source project in my spare time that involves using Rake to compile and display ActionScript SWFs, (more on that project coming soon), and one of the surprisingly difficult parts had to do with trying to get Rake tasks running from Eclipse.

Since I finally figured it out, and couldn’t seem to find any decent resources out there, I figured other folks might find this info useful.

Flash Lite Phone Recommendation

Posted by: Ali Mills Wed, 21 Feb 2007 08:14:00 GMT

If you’re interested enough in Flash Lite to (like me) buy a phone to experiment on, I’ve got some recommendations for you. My recommendations are based on experience spent on two recently completed Flash Lite projects (one Flash Lite 1 and one Flash Lite 2) where I worked with over twenty different phone models during the past three months.

From a Flash Lite performance perspective, I recommend a Symbian S60 2nd Edition phone. The S60 2nd Edition phones consistently worked better for me than all others and never crashed. It’s funny. I’d think that if “2” is good then “3” would be better, but that’s not the case here. Flash Lite performs better on S60 2nd Edition than the S60 3rd Edition. I recommend the following phones in the following order based on Flash Lite performance:

  1. Symbian S60 2nd Edition phones
  2. Symbian S60 3nd Edition phones
  3. Symbian S40 phones
  4. Verizon Wireless supported handsets
  5. Windows Mobile 5.0 devices

Great (and Free) Symbian Backlight for Flash Lite

Posted by: Ali Mills Wed, 07 Feb 2007 06:02:00 GMT

Demonstrating Flash Lite applications is difficult when the device’s backlight keeps turning off.

For devices like the PSP, Treo, Clix, and LG Chocolate it’s easy to keep the backlight on. In the case of the Clix it just stays on. For the LG Chocolates you just plug the device in. And, for the PSP and Treo you just adjust a backlight setting on the device.

For Symbian devices (most Nokias) keeping it on isn’t so easy. You need the help of third-party software. The best and most inclusive third-party software I’ve found is S60SpotOn. And, it’s free! I prefer S60SpotOn to Torch because it works on Nokia S60 3rd edition, S60 2nd edition FP3, S60 2nd edition. I could only get Torch to run on Nokia S60 2nd edition.

To avoid the error message “Certificate Error contact the application supplier” you might get when installing S60SpotOn on a Nokia S60 3rd edition device, you’ll need to change the “Software installation” setting from “Signed Only” to “All” and the “Onlline certic check” to “Off”. The E-Series blog describes how to change the settings on a Nokia E61 and Nokia E62 at http://www.e-series.org/archives/45 and http://www.e-series.org/archives/192, respectively.

If you want to go the other way on the Treo. If you want to turn its keyboard backlight off, you should try the Treo Keylight. It’s working great for me on a Treo 700W.
